Indigo dyes are produced by numerous plants all over the world. The Asian legume Indigofera tinctoria, however, has been —historically and economically— the most important of them all. The dyestuff come from the leaves of the plant. Unlike madder, indigo dyeing needs no mordants to better bind color to fiber, but it does need an oxygen-poor, alkaline medium for the pigments to stick to the textile. As the fibers are pulled out of the indigo vat, though, they aren’t blue, but a murky yellow instead. Blue only appears when the pigments oxidize when exposed to air. Indigo is very lightfast, yet the stain may rub off, e.g. in faded denim, the most iconic of indigo-dyed fabrics in the world.
