Madder dyes come mostly from the crimson roots of small climbing herbs that grow wild across Eurasia. For millennia, madder was Europe’s most reliable source of lightfast red hues, often combined with a mordant to help the color stick to the fiber. However, madder may also yield browns and oranges depending on the kind of mordants used, dye bath water, acidity, and temperature. From Africa to Japan, different species of Rubia have been used through the ages. This shirt has been dyed with Indian madder using no mordants during the process.
