The dyes known as quebracho colorado come from the heartwood of several South American trees with extremely hard wood; their name derives from “quiebra-hacha,” literally “ax-breaker.” In the 19th Century dyers discovered that quebrachos are also extremely rich in tannins and began using them in leather tanning and dyeing. Tannin-rich dyes usually yield hues from dark brown to soft pink that can be modified by adding metallic salts during the process. However, this tee shirt, dyed with Argentinian Schinopsis quebracho-colorado heartwood, has not been mordanted.
