The dyes known as quebracho colorado come from the heartwood of several South American trees with extremely hard wood; their name derives from “quiebra-hacha,” literally “ax-breaker.” In the 19th Century dyers discovered that quebrachos are also extremely rich in tannins and began using them in leather tanning and dyeing. Tannin-rich dyes usually yield hues from dark brown to soft pink that can be modified by adding metallic salts during the process. However, this shirt, dyed with Argentinian Schinopsis quebracho-colorado heartwood, has not been mordanted.
